Hunt Military Communities Saves $2.2 Million Through Utility Management and Sustainability Efforts

Hunt Military Communities Saves $2.2 Million Through Utility Management and Sustainability Efforts

Hunt Military Communities (HMC), the largest owner and operator of military housing in the U.S., has achieved over $2.2 million in savings through its Utility Expense Management (UEM) Program and dedicated Utility Management and Sustainability teams. These savings are reinvesting into enhancing military housing for service members and their families.

This effort aligns with the Department of Defense's sustainability and resource efficiency goals. By leveraging partnerships, and using advanced data analytics, HMC has streamlined utility billing, identified cost-saving opportunities, and introduced energy-saving measures across its communities.

Key Achievements

  • Utility Expense Management Program: Together with partners YES Energy Management, a third-party provider specializing in utility billing and invoice processing solutions, HMC’s UEM Program focuses on tracking abnormal usage patterns, efficient billing, and preventative maintenance. This proactive approach has optimized energy and water consumption across HMC properties.
  • Dedicated Teams: In 2024, HMC launched dedicated Utility Management and Sustainability teams. These teams work closely with the Operations and Maintenance teams to ensure the seamless integration of utility-saving initiatives and energy-efficient solutions.
  • Community Upgrades: Over 1,250 homes at Naval Station Great Lakes in Lake County, IL, received energy and water-saving updates, including high-efficiency lighting, low-flow water fixtures, and smart thermostats.
  • Resident Engagement: Resident utility billing programs were implemented to encourage responsible consumption, alongside ongoing leak detection, repairs, and billing audits.

Reinvesting Savings into Military Housing

The $2.2M savings have been reinvested into improving housing communities, focusing on energy-efficient upgrades, facility modernization, and shared space enhancements. These efforts help ensure military families live in comfortable, sustainable, and well-maintained homes.

“The success of our utility management strategies reflects our ongoing commitment to operational excellence and sustainability,” said Brian Stann, president and CEO of Hunt Military Communities. “We are proud of the collaborative efforts with our partners and internal teams, which achieve meaningful cost savings and directly improve the living experience for military families. By reinvesting these savings into housing projects, we ensure our communities remain safe, modern, and sustainable for the families who serve our country.”

Looking Forward

HMC will continue to expand its utility management strategies and sustainability efforts, reinforcing its commitment to operational efficiency, environmental stewardship, and improving the quality of life for military families.

By integrating strategic partnerships and focusing on setting environmental and community benefits; Hunt Military Communities sets a standard for sustainability and reinvestment in military housing.
